What is dark matter?

From the smallest building blocks of the universe to how galaxies form and evolve over billions of years: this entire range is covered by the University’s world-leading research in particle physics and astronomy. From where do particles gain their mass – will the newly discovered Higgs boson provide the final answer?

85 % of all matter in the universe is dark matter

From the smallest building blocks of the universe to how galaxies form and evolve over billions of years: this entire range is covered by the University’s world-leading research in particle physics and astronomy. Can energy-rich particles that reach the Earth tell us about processes in the universe? What is dark matter and dark energy?

Is physics changing our understanding of the world?

"What we do is not in the text-books"

The big ATLAS experiment at CERN:s LHC accelerator has produced a video where 15 out of the almost 2000 scientists who participate in the experiment describe what it is like to work in a research project like ATLAS. Three of the scientists who appear in the video - Christophe Clément, Kerstin Jon-And and Sara Strandberg - are presently employed at the Department of Physics.
