Activity descriptors of nickel-iron oxygen evolution electrocatalysts in the presence of cations

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key process that enables the storage of renewable energies in the form of chemical fuels. Electrolyte alkali metal cations have been shown to modify the activity and reaction intermediates in OER; however, the exact mechanism was not understood – until recently.

The impact of alkali metal cations on the OER activity.

Researches from Fysikum solved by careful experimentation and detailed theoretical analysis the old puzzle about the role of cations in OER, a problem that was studied for decades. Alkali metal cations dissociate at different rate and influence basicity of the solution differently. Our experimental data clearly show that any cations effect of different alkali metal in the same concentration on OER is negligible, so catalytic activity dominated by the electrolyte pH.
