How may Mathematics be gendered? Perspectives from new materialisms, feminism, and beyond

Seminar

Date: Wednesday 11 September 2024

Time: 14.00 – 16.00

Location: Hybrid seminar, Gula villan, room Minerva and Zoom

Welcome to our next seminar in the seminar series Gender, Gender Equality and Natural Sciences!

This hybrid panel discussion will continue the exploration of how various elements that constitute mathematics — practices, knowledge, institutions, history, emotions, and more — connect with the ways in which humans understand themselves as gendered beings. Three researchers with different expertise and sensibilities (new materialisms, feminism, and beyond) will take a fictional story in a calculus course as a point of departure, which all participants are encouraged to read in advance. The story invites the researchers and participants to reflect on how gender is perceived and enacted in both the story and real-world mathematical contexts. This event is open to all scholars and students interested in the interplay between gender and mathematical practices. Whether you are a mathematician, an educator, or curious about the topic, your presence will contribute to a rich and meaningful dialogue. The panel will be followed by Fika!

Invited Panelists
Leslie Jiménez (Chile); Luz Valoyez-Chavés (Chile); Third panelist TBA.
