Marine terrace formations and circular depressions, potentially related to submarine groundwater discharges (SGD), have been identified through high-resolution geophysical mapping and geological sampling of the seabed in several areas of the Baltic Sea. These SGDs may play an important role for spreading of pollutants, including radioactive substances, as well as for calculations of how large the inflow of nutrients can be to the Baltic Sea (especially phosphorus).
