Abstract
The spatial and temporal distribution of non-marine bivalves will be examined, focusing on the Carboniferous period in Western and Central Europe. To understand the changing patterns, we will examine some biological aspects of the life cycle of the freshwater bivalves today (taking into account the potential caveats of an actualistic approach), and then discuss their implications for the tectonic history of the Carboniferous Variscan belt.
