Diversity, e/quality

The dynamics of performance studies unfold at the intersection of a variety of theories and methodological approaches that combine both scholarly activities and performance practices.

Engaged in a critical and mutually enriching dialogue with cultural studies, gender studies, lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender and queer studies, postcolonial studies, critical race theory, children’s and youth studies, and visual culture, to name a few, ‘Performance Studies can offer … an extended metaphor for culture, and enrich the discussion of discourse, representation, body (to be distinguished from embodiment), and identity’ (Kirschenblatt-Gimblett, in Bial 2004: 43-44). Inspired by the Foucauldian notion of knowledge and power, we study the role of performance in various historical and geographical contexts, with particular attention to hegemonic social and cultural formations of racialization, gender, sexuality, generation, and class.
