This seminar addresses the phenomenon of morality within the context of Translation Studies with a particular focus on literary translation. Morality is a culture-specific term which refers to the values and behaviors that societies adopt as unwritten rules. Here, the concept of morality has been limited to encompass the notions of religion and gender/sexuality. The primary concern is to reveal how religious and sexual elements are handled in translation, and to evaluate the translations of these moral elements in the light of Habermas’s ‘translation proviso’. To that end, William Golding's To the Ends of the Earth trilogy and its Turkish translation have been analyzed in an attempt to elucidate how a morality-oriented text is/should be treated in a post-secular age.

The research is currently being conducted at the Institute for Interpreting and Translation Studies at Stockholm University and sponsored by TUBITAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) 2219 International Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program for Turkish Citizens.
