There's never a better time to experience what it's like living abroad than as a student.

What was the best experience with making an exchange at Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3?
The opportunity to live in Paris, even just for a short time, was undoubtedly the highlight of my exchange. My studies had impressed upon me a love of French culture, so to spend time in a city steeped in it was a real privilege. As a Cinema Studies student, I especially enjoyed how respected film is as an institution there and that's really mapped out in terms of the geography of the city; lots of cinemas are dotted across it, and I was lucky to visit some.

You spent you semester in Paris under Corona restrictions, how did you keep up your studies and social life?
While restrictions limited teaching to online tutorials, without the usual distractions, I actually found it easier to keep on top of my studies and manage working in a foreign language. My teachers were generally understanding and revised course plans in light of the changed learning environment. Of course, a little distraction is always welcome and I was fortunate to live in student accommodation, in a neighbourhood by the canal and with plenty of open space. This meant I could take lots of walks and still keep in touch with friends in my area.

Why do you think students should go for an exchange semester?
There's never a better time to experience what it's like living abroad than as a student. You've the opportunity to meet new people and be exposed to a different culture at what is a relatively carefree time in your life. And the thing about an exchange is you get to make that leap with all the supporta and resources of your exchange coordinator and host university who are there to help you settle into your new surroundings and guide you through any difficulties.

Do you have any advise for future exchange student?
Learn as much as you can about your host country in advance. Navigating a new country can be difficult and, sometimes, overwhelming, so just having a knowledge of cultural nuances when ordering in a restaurant or discounted travel for students can make a big difference
