NILAS Research seminar - Early States, Built Environment and Landscape in the Precolombian Americas

Seminar

Date: Friday 25 April 2025

Time: 14.00 – 15.30

Location: Library of the Nordic Institute of Latin American Studies (House B, Floor 5) & Online*

Per Cornell, Professor at Department of Historical Studies at University of Gothenburg

The early states of the Americas do resemble similar states in other parts of the world, but they also exhibit particularities. Over the last decades, there has been important advances in the study of the built environment and the uses of the landscape, which make us question several previously dominating thoughts. In this seminar, we will mainly look at the Mexican altiplano, the Maya region and Andean area, but also briefly comment on new developments in Amazonian archaeology. The way the landscape is used is of key importance to understand socio-economics and the workings of early states. The American cases will also be briefly contrasted to experiences from other parts of the world, and we will see both unexpected similarities and differences.

The research seminar on Latin American studies is open to scholars interested in Latin American issues. It welcomes the presentation of papers from researchers and PhD students from different social science disciplines.

The seminar takes place on Fridays every second week (odd numbers) at the Library of the Institute of Latin American Studies (House B, Floor 5).
