NILAS research seminar - Vinícius Machado Miguel
Seminar
Date: Friday 25 October 2024
Time: 14.00 – 15.30
Location: Library of the Nordic Institute of Latin American Studies (House B, Floor 5) & Online*
The production of subjectivities and political formation in the self-help of the Brazilian manosphere
One of the main literary genres produced and consumed in the world is advice literature, more specifically self-help books. In Brazil, masculinist movements are part of the far-right support base and have shown themselves to be politically active in attracting young men to strengthen reactionary bases that helped sustain Bolsonarism. This seminar aims to present how this self-help literature constructs resentful subjectivities, offers a worldview and support networks for atomized boys, and appropriates the systemic helplessness of neoliberalism, transforming them into anti-feminist (and often authoritarian) political practices.
Vinícius Machado Miguel is a PhD student at Fluminense Federal University (PPGCOM - UFF/Brazil) and a visiting researcher at Stockholm University. He specializes in the intersection of emotions, politics, and society in Media Studies.
The research seminar on Latin American studies is open to scholars interested in Latin American issues. It welcomes the presentation of papers from researchers and PhD students from different social science disciplines.
The seminar takes place on Fridays 14:00 – 15:30 every second week (odd numbers) at the Library of the Institute of Latin American Studies (House B, Floor 5).
