NILAS research seminar - Dr. Fernando Resende. Professor at the Department of Media and Cultural Studies and the Graduate Program in Communication, Fluminense Federal University, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Project: Conflict, territory and media in the Global South (CAPES/PRINT)

This seminar proposes the understanding of the so-called "Latin American geographical space" by departing from images produced today, particularly in Mexico and Brazil. Based on the premises that in Latin America "territory is a category of practice" and "the body is the minimum scale of resistance", the aim is to problematize issues related to identities and disputes over territory as significant parts of the formation of what we call "Latin America". In addition to image and body, which function as theoretical operators that tension our discussion, the concept of territory works as a fundamental tool for the exercise of reflecting on some of the effects that the "colonial machinery" has produced in that space. In the context of a usurped territory, some of what one can understand as "decolonizing gestures" allow us to see games of power and processes of re-existence, which are today constitutive of Latin American territory.
