Higher-order vagueness is most often associated with the idea of borderline cases of the application of predicates. What does it amount to when vagueness is associated with the idea of tolerance instead? This paper makes a proposal in this direction. ‘Definitely’ is here understood as a predicate modifier that moves the extension of a predicate along a dimension of variation. The idea is implemented in a central-gap approach to vagueness.
