The course will give an overview of the current field of assertion. It will locate assertion within speech act theory and pragmatics more generally, and it will present the major types of account of what assertion is, and also some of the discussion of the issues involved. It will also provide a look into the recent literature on lying and misleading as well as into recent applications of experimental methods to the subject.
