In this course, we will explore moral partialism – the type of view on which we have special moral obligations, responsibilities and entitlements to those standing in certain and closer relations to us. In the first part of the course we will focus on different ways to distinguish between impartialist and partialist moral theories. In the second, and the major, part of the course we will critically examine different attempts to justify moral partialism and how they relate to different positions in moral theory. We will also have a look at epistemic partialism. The main format of the course is a series of seminars. Students are expected to participate actively in discussions and to have read the relevant text for each meeting.
