Biosynthesis and functions of coenzyme Q.

Coenzyme Q (CoQ) is present in all tissues and membranes and it is a member of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. In addition, a number of other important functions were found to be associated with this lipid, such as serving as endogenous antioxidant and regulator of the cellular immunological system. Our aim is to establish the biosynthetic mechanism of this lipid and clarify the regulatory mechanisms utilized under various physiological and pathological processes. A main effort is development of an efficient drug that is able to increase the cellular content of this lipid. In some mitochondrial diseases and in the aging process tissue CoQ levels are low. In our experimental system diabetes and its complications can be considerably improved by antioxidativ treatment, first of all by increased amount of CoQ.
