The programme started with a speech from Mikael Rostila, the head of the new department, in which he greeted all guests. Thereafter the President of Stockholm university, Astrid Söderbergh Widding, delivered the inauguration speech.

- I am both glad and proud today. Now Stockholm university has good possibilities to develop the field public health sciences adding social aspects in research as well as education.

The two departments bring different aspects to the field

The cooperation between the two departments for public health sciences in Stockholm (Stockholm university and Karolinska institutet) is important and fruitful. This was stressed by Sus president, Astrid Söderbergh Widding and KIs vice chancellor Karin Dahlman-Wright. They also agreed that the two departments will have a positive impact on one another. Together they will strengthen the wide fielt of public health sciences.

17 years difference within 5 kilometers

During the inauguration a speech was delivered by Clare Bambra, professor from Newcastle University Medical School on health inequality. She gave examples from England, the US and Sweden that showed how socioeconomic factors can have an impact on health. She gave an example from England where expected life length in the population varied 17 years between two areas which were situated only 17 km from one another.

After the entertainment Robin Room, professor at SU and La Trobe University in Melbourne talked about alcohol and gambling abuse. The last speaker was Olle Lundberg, professor at SU and theDdepartment for Public Health Sciences.


Mingle and refreshments

After the interesting speeches all guests went out in the foyer where refreshments were served. During the mingling the guests had the opportunity to continue discussions and also to get to know other researchers. A new department had been born!
