The Film Musical: Theory and Context

This module will examine a range of international film musical productions within a framework that prioritises the diversity of theoretical and contextual approaches to the genre. Each session focuses on a different critical perspective and these include the work of Jane Feuer, Rick Altman, Richard Dyer and Stanley Cohen and Laurie Taylor. The module will also explore key concepts such as the function of space and place, the construction of gender, choreography and the soundtrack, pop and cult musicals and the musical moment.
