Gianfranco Selgas, PhD candidate in Spanish with focus on Latin American Literature and Culture, has been awarded the “Award for Best Humanities Article on Venezuela 2021” by the Venezuelan Studies Section of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA). Selgas’ article “El secreto de la tierra: Entangled Poetics and the Venezuelan Amazon in Una ojeada al mapa de Venezuela (1939), by Enrique Bernardo Núñez” shares the award with Northwestern University Associate Professor Nathalie Bouzaglo’s article “Plagiarism and Authorship in Turn-of-the-Century Venezuela.” Brown University Assistant Professor Felipe Martínez-Pinzón received the honorable mention for his article “A ‘People to Come’: Agricultural Crisis, Immigrant Settlements, and Manumission in Fermín Toro’s Los mártires.”

The Venezuelan Studies Section of the Latin American Studies Association awards the Best Article on Venezuela Award every two years in order to promote high quality research on Venezuela. The award focuses on two disciplinary areas: Humanities and Social Sciences. LASA is the largest professional association in the world for individuals and institutions engaged in the study of Latin America. With over 13,000 members, over 60% of whom reside outside the United States, LASA is the one association that brings together experts on Latin America from all disciplines and diverse occupational endeavors, across the globe.
