Abstract

Language Maintenance of Lithuanian Immigrants in Sweden: An Investigation of Family Language Policies

The thesis investigates family language policies of Lithuanian families in Sweden and attempts to shed some light on the maintenance of Lithuanian as a heritage language. Applying an ethnographic approach, the analysis shows that families make both, including and excluding experiences regarding their heritage language. Most parents are aware that their children have limited access to Lithuanian and identify a need to foster the heritage language development which motivates different language management strategies relating to status planning, corpus planning and acquisition planning. Yet, parents are not the exclusive language managers within the families, but some children do also take the role of a language manager and influence the family language policy, either supporting or opposing the parents’ implementations. Finally, the thesis considers how aspects of family language policies contribute to either harmonious or frustrative and conflictive development of the Lithuanian heritage language within the family.
