Dr. Inge Daniels’ book The Japanese House, Material Culture in the Modern Home (Berg 2010), has won the ICAS 2013 Book Prize Accolade for Outstanding Production Values. The book, with stunning photography by Susan Andrews, was accompanied by a successful exhibition based upon Dr. Daniels’ fieldwork in Japan. The exhibition itself, At Home in Japan – Beyond the Minimal House held at the Geffrye Museum, London, formed part of her research, a process she refers to as an ‘experiment in living ethnography’. In this short interview, produced by the Department of Social Anthropology, Stockholm University, Dr. Daniels highlights the significance of material culture in her present research at the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology, University of Oxford.
