Abstract

How social mobility influences childbearing decisions and longevity is a question that has generated much debate, yet the lack of large, high quality data has prohibited a full exploration of both demographic outcomes. Additionally, little cross-semination of theoretical and methodological developments has occurred between social stratification, fertility and mortality research. Building on the strengths of these respective literatures, I use Swedish register data to explore how social mobility influences these important life course events. Time is treated more carefully than in previous studies by observing individuals continually rather than periodically. Gender-specific and couple-specific mechanisms are explored as well as how the link to social mobility is altered in different economic contexts.
