A Virtual Private Network (VPN) is an encrypted connection to the university’s network that allows users to connect from any location with an internet connection and enjoy similar functionality as from their regular workplace. VPNs are a commonly used solution for secure connection to protected networks.

For example, by using a VPN, you can access the files in your home directory and systems within SU (e.g., Raindance/Mercur), as well as library databases. Currently, access to email via Exchange/webmail is also limited for users abroad, and this issue is also solved by using a VPN.

As for the email restriction, we don’t know how long it will last. We are entirely reliant on Microsoft to come out with the security updates needed to plug the security hole. As soon as these are available and installed, we can remove the temporary restriction.

In some cases, your department/equivalent organisational body may have limited resources or systems to a specific local area network. In such a case, contact the manager at the department and see if this resource can be made available on the SU network.

There are currently two different VPN services at SU: one that works only for computers connected to SU Workstation (Arbetsplatstjänsten), and one that works for all computers and even mobile devices.

To install a VPN on computers connected to SU Workstation, you must be connected to the university’s network (preferably via a network cable). It may therefore be useful to take the opportunity to do this when you have other errands to take care of on campus.
