Following a previous decision by the Safety Committee that a smoking ban should be imposed in all new and newly renovated premises, the University Director decided, on the basis of the act amending the Tobacco Act (1993:581) SFS 1994:98, to introduce a total smoking ban at Stockholm University’s premises from 1 January 1999.

Exceptions to this smoking ban apply to parts of premises or other areas that are specially designated or approved by the University's senior management team for smoking, such as smoking rooms and smoking areas in cafés.
