After graduating from the Stockholm School of Economics, Gummesson earned his Ph.D. from Stockholm University. He received numerous honors in academia, including becoming a fellow and Honorary Doctor of Hanken School of Economics, Helsinki, as well as a fellow of the University of Tampere in Finland, among other notable distinctions. He was widely regarded as an international pioneer in the fields of marketing, service, relationships, and qualitative methodology, owing to his extensive experience and expertise.

During his career at Stockholm Business School, Gummesson rose to become a leader in the field of service management and marketing, contributing numerous influential academic articles and books and serving on the editorial boards of many prominent journals. He received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career, including the prestigious American Marketing Association's Award for Career Contributions to the Service Discipline.

In addition to his academic achievements, Gummesson was a mentor and inspiration to many students and colleagues. He was highly respected for his collaborative spirit and worked with scholars from around the world to advance the field of marketing. He was also a sought-after consultant for numerous organizations and a frequent keynote speaker at conferences and events worldwide.

The passing of Professor Gummesson is a great loss to the academic community and to those who knew him personally. He will be remembered for his intellectual curiosity, his dedication to teaching and research, and his unwavering commitment to advancing the field of marketing and management.
