A pioneering research hub: introducing the Stockholm Center on Global Governance (SCGG)

We are excited to announce the establishment of the Stockholm Center on Global Governance (SCGG), a pioneering hub for research and dialogue on global governance issues. Established to address pressing global challenges, SCGG aims to foster interdisciplinary research and cultivate solutions to today's most complex global governance challenges.

SCGG is the first center for global governance research in Northern Europe. It is co-directed by professor Jonas Tallberg, Department of Political Science, and professor Lisa Dellmuth, Department of Economic History and International Relations.

SCGG’s research will generate insights into how the international community can address some of today’s most pressing governance challenges.

Understanding the dynamics of global governance is paramount in today’s world, which grapples with challenges such as climate change, virus pandemics, financial crises, and military conflicts. By establishing the SCGG, we aim to both consolidate and advance the outstanding research on global governance carried out across several disciplines at Stockholm University.

The expectations on global governance to deliver have never been higher, but at the same time, this system also appears more contested than ever.

Today, multilateral institutions are both being criticized by civil society for being injust and not ambitious enough, but at the same time, these institutions are also being challenged by rising powers questioning their legitimacy and by anti-globalist populist politicians and political movements wishing to regain national control.

The main research theme of SCGG therefore revolves around exploring the contestation of global governance within four key policy areas: economy, environment, security, and technology.

SCGG tackles the overarching question of why, how, and with what consequences global governance is contested. Specifically, we delve into the origins, processes, and outcomes of contestation in global governance, along with avenues for reform to foster greater democracy, effectiveness, and fairness.

In addition to conducting research, SCGG prioritizes graduate training and outreach activities.

SCGG integrates research, graduate training, and outreach within a coherent framework. By establishing SCGG, we aspire to cultivate a distinctive interdisciplinary milieu at the forefront of international research. Our goal is to serve as a catalyst for interdisciplinary research on global governance and as a fount of knowledge for academia, politics, and society." As such SCGG offers various initiatives, including a visiting researcher program, a graduate school, and a plethora of events and networking opportunities.

The inauguration event for SCGG is scheduled for May 2nd at Spökslottet. The event will celebrate the establishment of the new center together with 50 guests from the research community and broader society, including representatives from business, politics, and civil society. The event will also mark the official opening of SCGG and serve as an opportunity to engage in dialogue and collaboration on global governance research.

With the establishment of SCGG, Stockholm University reaffirms its commitment to addressing global governance challenges through rigorous research, collaboration, and innovation. The center promises to be a vital asset in shaping the future of global governance research and fostering positive change on a global scale.
