Description:

National courts have come to play a significant role in climate transformation. More than 2 000 lawsuits related to climate change have been initiated in more than 40 states, in all regions of the world. While these cases look very different and reflect the special legal feature of each particular jurisdiction, they reveal the common concerns for climate change – and the trust in courts to hold states as well as private actors to account. In many of these lawsuits, the plaintiffs refer to international law as part of their claims and grounds. In particular, this is the case in Europe, where the European Convention on Human Rights has been frequently invoked.

Discussants:

At this event, Jonas Ebbesson, professor of environmental law at Stockholm University, and Anna Rogalska Hedlund, legal counsel acting in the Aurora Case against the Swedish State, will debate the importance and challenges of courts and the rule of law in climate change transformation. There will also be opportunities for participants to ask questions and make comments.
