Legal and political obstacles to accountability for the use of chemical weapons in Syria

Description:

There is mounting evidence that international crimes are being committed in Syria on a massive scale, including with the use of chemical weapons. Despite widespread condemnation, criminal accountability has been elusive. Professor Cerone will disentangle the legal and political obstacles to accountability for the use of chemical weapons in Syria, and will propose possible avenues for navigating through those obstacles.

Bio:

Professor Cerone holds faculty appointments as the Paul Martin Senior Professor in International Affairs & Law at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law, and as a Visiting Professor of International Law at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy (Tufts University), and is currently a Fellow at the Nobel Institute in Oslo. He has previously held positions and received appointments at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, the Lund University Faculty of Law and the New England School of Law. He teaches Public International Law, International Human Rights Law, International Criminal Law, International Humanitarian Law / the Law of Armed Conflict, and International Organizations. Professor Cerone has worked for a number of different intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations, including the UN, OSCE, the International Secretariat of Amnesty International, and the International Crisis Group, and has served as a legal adviser to various international criminal courts and tribunals.
