Stockholm Center for International Law and Justice invites you to a seminar with Dr. Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark on the topic: Minorities on the Border between International and Constitutional Law

The year 2019 signifies the centenary since the establishment of the League of Nations, including a first effort for a broader legal management of minority issues, though mainly in Europe. The presentation draws upon nearly three decades of research and including experience of the Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention on National Minorities of the Council of Europe. It is argued that minority matters are at the heart of many contemporary debates concerning pluralism and constitutional accommodation of diversities in Europe. Such needs come at odds with nationalist and xenophobic trends visible across the old continent while they also reconfigure the distinction between ‘the national’ and ‘the international’.

Bio:

Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark is associate professor of international law and director of the Åland Islands Peace Institute. Her most recent publication is entitled Demilitarisation and International Law in Context – The Åland Islands (Routledge, 2018).
