The Stockholm Centre for International Law and Justice invites you to a book launch with Amin Parsa author of "Targeting in International law: Counterinsurgency and the legal materiality of the principle of distinction"

Description:

In this book talk, Parsa explores targeting in contemporary warfare through their dependency on the production of technological modes of visibility. Drawing upon insights from theories of legal materiality and critical visual studies, Parsa argues that there is a co-productive relationship between technologies of visualisation, principle of distinction and the legitimation of wartime violence. Far from being passive objects of regulation, visual technologies, such as drones, above all operate to tinker with the boundaries of legitimate violence, resulting in a condition where laws of armed conflict are reshaped through technological operations.

Bio:

 

Amin Parsa is assistant professor in sociology of law at Halmstad University. His primary research interest is law and technology, in specific the use of visual technologies in the context of armed conflicts as well as border control practices.
