Theme: Looking back and moving forward -
challenges and opportunities for children’s rights research

The symposium will start with a panel consisting of Aoife Daly, University College Cork, Ireland, Karl Hanson, University of Geneva, Switzerland, Maria Roth, Babes-Bolyai University, Romania, and Anna Nylund, University of Bergen, Norway, in which the overall theme will be discussed.

About the event

Since 2013, the CREAN Children's Rights Research PhD Symposium has annually brought together doctoral candidates and supervisors from many universities and different disciplines. By actively promoting collaboration and scholarly exchange in an international and interdisciplinary setting, the symposium offers an opportunity to broaden academic perspectives and contribute to our understanding of children's rights.

This event will mark the 10th anniversary of the CREAN Children’s Rights Symposium. Over the last decade, there has been a notable increase in both public attention and research regarding children's rights and the UNCRC. This has contributed to the prevalence of a children’s rights perspective in legislation, policy and case-law across European jurisdictions and elsewhere. The position of children as independent right holders and competent actors has indeed been established. Much has been achieved, but new challenges have emerged. For example, children’s rights are increasingly being utilized as a rationale for political reform, but often without sufficient discussion about what the actual needs of children are and how these needs are to be met. Furthermore, as more and stronger rights for children continues to be an expressed political objective, a backlash can be seen in some sectors and fields of law. For example, the welfare and rights of children are often overshadowed by other, often repressive, societal interests in both migration law and criminal law.

In response to this complex landscape there is a need to discuss the challenges and opportunities of today as well as new approaches. In this symposium this will be done from a comparative perspective with the aim to learn from each other and our different contexts, disciplines, jurisdictions as well as social and legal cultures.

Format for the symposium

PhD presentations and panels
Each panel is 1 h 15 min and panelists are expected to give a 10 min presentation of their topic. After the presentations a designated commentator (a senior researcher) will give feedback and ask questions. The sessions will thereafter end with questions and feedback from the attending audience.

In person-attendance and social events
The symposium will take place at Stockholm University and participation online will not be possible. Apart from academic presentations and discussions focus will also be on informal exchange, social events and networking.

The symposium will be held from lunch on the 13th until the afternoon of the 14th June 2024 with an option to stay for an additional social event in the evening of the 14th.

Public Transportation – SL

Stockholm has a well-developed public transport system.

All trains, including interregional trains, commuter trains, arrive at the central train station. The main hub for the subway – T-centralen – is directly connected to the central train station. Stockholm Public Transport (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik) commonly referred to as SL is the organization running all of the land based public transport systems in Stockholm City and surrounding county. There are two types of SL tickets: travelcards and single journey tickets. You can buy travelcards for 24, 72 hours or 7 days at discounted fare, or load any type of travelcard on an SL access smart card. You can also download the SL app, for planning and for tickets (QR codes).

The Subway has three lines (red, green and blue) which includes mains hubs at T-centralen, Tekniska Högskolan, Odenplan, Fridhemsplan and Slussen which connect to interregional trains, commuter trains and buses.

In Stockholm city there are red and blue buses. The blue buses (numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6) travel at high frequency (4-5 minutes interval between bused during rush hours), often connected to the main subway hubs. For more information please visit www.sl.se/en.

Transport to/from Airport

Stockholm Arlanda Airport is located approximately 42 kilometres from the centre of Stockholm. There are multiple ways to travel to and from the airport:

Taxi: taxi to/from Stockholm comes at fixed costs between 500-600 SEK depending on the taxi firm.

Arlanda Express: Airport express train to/from Stockholm city

SL/SJ train: commuter or regional train to/from Stockholm city. If you have bought SL travelcard you need to pay an extra fee at the airport.

Flygbussarna: buses directly to/from Stockholm city terminal, least expensive option. In addition to Stockholm Arlanda Airport, there are two smaller airports which have some international airline traffic: Skavsta Airport and Bromma airport. They are served by taxis and Flygbussarna.
