New publication – Serpents and Crosses

Serpents and Crosses is the third volume of Brita Malmer's Corpus of Scandinavian coins from the Viking Age.

The manuscript was not ready at Malmer’s death in 2013. We are most grateful to Bo Gunnarsson for having accepted the task of finishing the editing.

This volume of about 560 pages is richly illustrated and consists of three parts. The first part is an update of Malmer's doctoral thesis Nordiska Mynt före år 1000 (1966) focusing on the very earliest Nordic coins minted in Hedeby and Ribe

The second part is a continuation of The Anglo-Scandinavian Coinage c. 995–1020 (1997). It presents the Scandinavian imitations of Cnut the Great’s English coin types Pointed Helmet and Short Cross, along with some other types.

The final part deals with the Danish Serpent type. Arguments are put forward indicating the introduction of a monetary economy in Lund during the 1020s.

Serpents and Crosses is part of the series Commentationes de nummis saeculorum IX–XI in Suecia repertis. Nova Series with Kenneth Jonsson as general editor. The series is published by the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities in collaboration with Stockholm Numismatic Institute at Stockholm University.
