14 November 2024.

On 25 November in Busan, Korea, governments from around the world will come together to finalise an international agreement covering a number of actions and goals to end plastics pollution, including in the marine environment. The treaty aims to address impacts from the full life cycle of plastics and to promote a circular economy. A coalition of ambitious countries wants to see common goals to reduce plastics production, as well as rules on certain problematic plastics products and hazardous chemicals used in plastics, sustainable design of plastics products, as well as investments to improve waste management and recycling.

During this seminar, you will learn how plastics pollution affects global Earth systems process, including in marine system, and better understand the interconnections between science, policy and society in the global plastics treaty context. We will also investigate why limiting the global production of plastics is necessary to curb greenhouse gas emissions as well as the environmental impact of plastics pollution.
