Baltic Breakfast: New methods for environmental monitoring
Seminar
Date: Thursday 24 October 2024
Time: 08.30 – 09.15
Location: Scandic Klara, Slöjdgatan 7, Stockholm
The oceans are affected by pollution, most of which occurs on land. Human activities affect marine ecosystems, sometimes in dramatic ways such as algal blooms and fish kills, but often in more subtle ways. How can we know what is happening? And what is the problem? How do you know what actions to take? And how do you know if they have had the desired effect? The answer to all these questions is environmental monitoring.
Long time series of environmental data from environmental monitoring provide the scientific basis for understanding large-scale changes in the ocean and thus a prerequisite for cost-effective measures for a healthier sea. Without sufficient knowledge, society's increasing need for the right actions at the right time cannot be met.
Current monitoring is not sufficient and is under constant threat of cuts. New and updated legislation, such as the Nature Restoration Regulation, also brings new requirements for environmental monitoring. The need to streamline monitoring is increasing. This involves both new methods and the selection of what to monitor.
Researchers are constantly working to develop new methods. This seminar will discuss some examples that can contribute to more effective environmental monitoring. We will get an introduction to environmental DNA together with remote sensing, and new discovery-based workflows developed to comprehensively detect known and unknown organic pollution in waters.
Participants:
Francisco Nascimiento, Associate Professor, Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Science, Stockholm University
May Britt Rian, PhD student, Department of Environmental Sciences, Stockholm University
Moderator: Gun Rudquist, Head of Policy, Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre
