Good to know when planning your Askö stay

The Askö Laboratory was originally an old and small archipelago estate, which was taken over by Stockholm University in 1961. Since then, it has been expanded in several phases.

The elder buildings charm and names have been preserved, although the functions have changed. Nowadays you have a very nice living standard in both the Laundry Room and the Stable. However, the old main building has been rebuilt as a well-equipped kitchen, a spacious dining room and a cozy living room with sofas, TV and sound system.

Pristine waters with many different marine ecosystems, nice baths, beautiful nature and the mandatory sauna make a stay at the Askö Laboratory a fantastic field experience.

Self-catering in well-equipped kitchen

Self-catering for researchers and courses is the most common choice at the field station and we have a kitchen that suits most dining purposes. Some of the small cottages have their own cooking facilities and there is also a smaller building, "Lilla mässen" available. This one is recommended for smaller groups for that visit the island parallell to other larger groups. Welcome to contact the staff for tips or questions about food, catering or shopping tours to Trosa!

Accommodation for 40 guests

At the station there are simple standard single and multi-bed bedrooms and smaller cabins to accommodate 40 guests per night.

Sink with running water is available in most rooms. Showers and toilets are available in corridors and other common areas.

Always bring your own sheets (Sleeping bag is not allowed!) and slippers.

Spare time activities in beautiful surroundings

The nature on Askö is very beautiful, and there are plenty of berries, mushrooms and lovely swimming sites at both rocky and sandy beaches. Parts of the island are, however, very inaccessible and you should have a map and compass if you turn off from known roads. Always tell the staff if you are going on a long trip. You can also take the rowing boat and go on a little trip if the weather allows. TBE vaccination is recommended for long-term guests.

Games

Several games are available for sunny days and evenings at the station. Ask the staff if you want to try out the badminton set, table tennis, volleyball, kubb or something else.

Lounge areas

In the tower room there is seating for about 10-15 people with magnificent view of Askö, the harbor basin and the sea.

A small library with mainly manuals and species determination literature belongs to the laboratory. There is also a conference table with seating for 10 people.

In the entrance hall there is plenty of space and beautiful aquariums with various typical Baltic Sea environments and species. There are also a number of posters that present our business, the Baltic Sea and research.

In the large dining building "Mässen" there is a room with sofas, TV with the possibility to use the crome cast and sound system.

There is a nice little sauna right next to the station.
