On the 16 October, the Baltic Sea Centre replied to the European Commission’s consultation on reducing releases in the environment of microplastics.

The consultation supports a Commission study identifying sources of microplastics. It is part of the preparatory work leading up to the European Plastic Strategy which the Commission envisages to present at the end of the year.

The Baltic Sea Centre has primarily focused on the marine environment in its reply, justifying its grading for each source.

The sources are numerous and the measures proposed will need to be individually targeted depending on the legal framework.
