Nanocellulose, i.e. cellulose in the nanometer scale, extracted from biomass following a top-down approach, are available in the form of nanofibers and nanocrystals or its combinations with residual lignin or hemicelluloses. This family of biobased nanomaterials can be used in broad range of applications including nanocomposite production due to the high specific modulus (100-160 GPa), strength (22 GPa, theoretical) and surface area. How can we use this nanomaterial in sustainable nanocomposite materials? What are the challenges and possibilities in the field? What are the related sustainability considerations?
