Towards a circular economy that respects and responds to planetary priorities, seminar by Tiina Häyhä and Celinda Palm, Stockholm Resilience Center
Academia: Planetary perspective for fashion and textile industry
Tiina Häyhä and Celinda Palm, Stockholm University
Global fashion and textile industry’s ‘take-make-use-waste’ value chains are pushing far beyond planet’s sustainable limits. Large scale and long-term perspectives are needed to avoid spillover effects and problem shifting in actions taken in the fashion sector. A transition to a circular economy has been proposed as as a way for the fashion industry to tackle global environmental challenges. We link circular economy principles with the planetary boundaries framework, helping to set business decision making within its globally interconnected social and environmental context.
Tiina Häyhä is a researcher at the Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University. Her research focuses on sustainable circularity from an ecological economics perspective and developing approaches for operationalising global sustainability at national and sectoral levels.
Celinda Palm is a PhD candidate at the Stockholm Resilience Centre, Stockholm University. Her transdisciplinary research focuses on the sustainable circularity of the global fashion system to understand the relationship between everyday practices and the Earth's systems.
