Article with Erica Zeglio

SUCCeSS welcomes Erica as a new board member whose background in chemistry and organic bioelectronics bridges electronics, biology, and sustainability.

What motivated you to join the board of SUCCeSS, and what about its mission resonates most with you?
This will be my first experience as a board member for a research center, and I see it as a unique opportunity to learn from my colleagues while actively contributing to shaping the vision and future of SUCCeSS. I believe that SUCCeSS’s mission to promote sustainable research across disciplines is a very important one and I am grateful to have the chance to contribute.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and how your experience will contribute to the board’s work?
I am a chemist by training, but since my PhD I have focused on the field of organic bioelectronics. In essence, my work involves developing materials and devices that operate at the interface between electronics and biology. This inherently interdisciplinary field has given me experience in bridging diverse areas of research and communicating across disciplines, skills that I believe will be valuable to the board’s work. I also see strong connections between my research and SUCCeSS vision to advance circular and sustainable systems, which I hope to help advance through SUCCeSS.

What are your hopes or priorities for the organization in the coming years?
I hope that the center will continue to create opportunities for researchers across disciplines to learn from and collaborate with each other. I would also like to see SUCCeSS play an even stronger role in bridging the gap between academic research and real-world innovation in sustainable and circular solutions.

From your perspective, what are some of the biggest opportunities or challenges in our field right now?
My field has been long dominated by the need to achieve the best possible performance for materials and devices. The change in focus towards sustainability means that we have a tremendous opportunity to contribute with new materials and technologies that are not only efficient but also environmentally responsible, for example through the use of renewable building blocks, circular design principles, and low-impact manufacturing.

On a lighter note — what do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I think that I am an explorer both at work and off work. I really enjoy nature and I always find the time to do something outdoor, but I also like visiting new places and trying new dishes. My bucket list is quite long.
