As part of the Nobel week, the SUCCeSS community got the opportunity to meet with the 2021 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry, Prof. David McMillan and Prof. Benjamin List to discuss the future direction of the centre.

The SUCCeSS community were all invited to take part in the meeting, and we had SUCCeSS senior advisors Prof. Paul Anastas and Prof. Tanja Zimmerman with us, as well as Prof. John Warner, one of the founders of green chemistry.

It was an animated and interesting discussion about how to build a larger cross-disciplinary research community and how to think outside the box.

Prof. McMillan concluded that we need to work on getting away from creating silos in science, and stressed the importance of interdisciplinary research for sustainable development.

They however also underlined the importance for fundamental research.
Defining and identifying the big questions for future research is one of the keys and great challenges for sustainable development, the Laureates concluded.
