Choir Singing: A Promising Approach to Aging Gracefully

Last week, Assoc. Prof. Laszlo Harmat from Linnaeus University and the PhD candidate Miriam Nilsson were interviewed by TV4 at SUBIC about their unique research project exploring whether choir singing can help slow down the aging process.

Assoc. Prof. Laszlo Harmat from Linnaeus University and his team, including the PhD candidate Miriam Nilsson, have assembled a choir consisting of 40 members aged between 65 and 75, aiming to improve physical, psychological, and cognitive health through singing. Mari Källman, one of the participants, shares her positive experience of being part of the choir, emphasizing its importance in staying mentally and physically fit.

Laszlo Harmat explained that they hope to observe structural changes in the brain using MRI at SUBIC after ten months of choir rehearsals once a week. The researchers are seeking additional funding to continue the project with a professional choir conductor, but assure that the choir will persist even if funding runs out, as it serves a vital social function.
