This course is given free of charge to international students admitted to a course, exchange program, bachelor/master or an equivalent agreement containing at least 15 ECTS at Stockholm University meeting our requirements. Under certain conditions a student may need to pay a fee for taking this course. 

Is prior knowledge in the Swedish language required?

  • For admission to the beginners' level, Course 1, no previous knowledge of Swedish is required. See below.
  • For admission to the intermediate and advanced courses, Course 2–6, a placement test has to be taken to establish which level you are allowed to enter. See below.
  • If you have passed a level during the previous semester you are allowed to continue to the next intermediate or advanced level without taking the placement test, under the condition that you still meet the requirements for applying to the course. See below: Registration for continuing students.


Please note that it is not possible to apply to one of these courses if you are not a student at Stockholm University, or will be studying less than 15 ECTS at Stockholm University during the semester you apply for. It is also not possible to apply for a higher level without taking the placement test or without passing the previous level.

Registration for true beginners (Course 1)

If you wish to start learning Swedish in the fall semester 2019, registration will open on this website in August 2019.

A few days before the course starts you will receive a confirmation e-mail with information about the start date, how to choose group and links to the schedule. Course 1 in period 1 starts the first week of September (week 36). 

 
N.B. If you choose to start course 1 in period 1, you will also be able to take course 2 during the same semester. 
 
If you prefer to take course 1 in period 2, a second registration period will open on our website in September.

Placement test – for students with previous knowledge of Swedish  (Course 2–6)

Registration for the intermediate and advanced courses will open on this website in August 2019. If you have previous knowledge of Swedish you also need to take a digital placement test. A link to the test will be provided within the application form. 
 
A few days before the courses start you will receive a confirmation e-mail with information about your course level, how to choose group and links to the schedules. The intermediate and advanced courses (course 2–6) start the second week of September (week 37).

Registration for continuing students (Course 2–6)

If you pass the final exam of course 1 in period 1, you may register for course 2 during the same semester. Information on how to register will be published on the course site in Athena after the exams have been corrected. 
 

If you have previously passed a certain level during the autumn semester of 2018 or later, you can apply to the next level via your student account in Ladok: “Application for next course level” within the Swedish course. The application always opens after the exams have been corrected. 

If you took a course further back in time, or are unable to apply via your student account, please contact the Student Office with your full name and student number.
