Karl Magnus and Karl Magnus Krønike are both translations (or adaptations) of Old French heroic poems chansons de geste about Charlemagne and his Peers. In the process of translation, these texts changed their original form, being thus able to adapt to a new cultural environment. Alongside other translated texts like Eufemiavisor, these adaptations brought new concepts and enabled the Old East Norse audience to take part in the European literary discourses of e.g. ‘Otherness’ and identity constructions.

The presentation aims to discuss the modes of transformation from an Old French heroic poem to the contemporary Old East Norse texts regarding their transmission in the manuscripts from the 15th century.
