In 1945, mass balance measurements were initiated at Storglaciären, which today has the longest continuous detailed mass balance series in the world, and is one of the worlds ca. 50 so-called reference glaciers. These first measurements in 1945 also marked the starting point for activities that would later be at the core of what became Tarfala Research Station.

Therefore, in 2025, we celebrate TRS’s 80 year anniversary. Notably, 2025 is also the “International Year of Glacier Preservation” proclaimed by the United Nations to raise worldwide attention for ongoing cryospheric changes. While glaciological and geomorphological studies were at the core of TRS operations in its early decades, activities broadened later to include studies on permafrost, hydrology, climatology, and ecology, among others, and today occasionally even involve art projects to visualize and communicate the ongoing research in addition to other science communication such as science café and open house days.

Program

The program of TRS’ 80th anniversary conference has a forward-looking theme and provides an occasion for international experts and stakeholders to exchange knowledge, strengthen existing collaborations and explore new opportunities for joint projects.

Conference dates and activities: The conference will be held at Stockholm university in a lunch-to-lunch format on August 25-26, 2025 where talks are given by invited speakers, and where we welcome poster contributions by conference participants (see below). A post-conference excursion to Tarfala Research Station takes place on August 29-30. August 27-28 are reserved as travel days.
Registration fee: Conference participation at Stockholm University is free of charge, and includes participation in the sessions scheduled on August 25 and 26, as well as refreshments and the conference dinner on August 25. Registration is no later than Friday May 16.

Post-conference excursion to TRS

Because accommodation at TRS is limited, we kindly ask for expressions of interest in the post-conference excursion no later than Thursday April 17.

Note that while accommodation and meals at TRS will be free of charge during the post-conference excursion, participants need to arrange their own travels from Stockholm to TRS, with potential overnight stay in Nikkaluokta before hiking up to TRS depending on the time of arrival and weather conditions. There are also possibilities for helicopter flights between Nikkaluokta and TRS. While TRS will arrange the helicopter logistics, costs for helicopter flights will have to be charged to participants. The post-conference excursion ends on August 30 at TRS, and participants need to arrange their own travel, but are welcome to stay another night at TRS and e.g. hike down in the morning of August 31. TRS will provide a recommended travel itinerary and gearlist. Note that participation in the post conference excursion cannot be guaranteed. However, confirmations will be communication no later than Thursday April 24  so that participants can book their travels in time.
