The aim is to publish all finds on the Internet. In the printed volumes all finds in a province or in a number of parishes were published at the same time. The order in which the finds will be published on the Internet will be decided by convenience. However, the numbering system will continue to follow the geographical order. From now on the names will follow the Swedish alphabet, that is Å, Ä and Ö will be placed at the end. So far they have been published as alphabetical ”Aa”, ”Ae” and ”Oe” respectively.
Every province has a number in the series. Within each subvolume every find has a number. Every coin in a find has its own number. These numbers should be used when citing a find or a coin. For example 1.22.3.10 refers to province 1 (Gotland), subvolume 22 (Roma parish), find 3 (Lilla Väller) and coin no. 10. This references applies both to the text and the illustration.
Since the finds will be published intermittently reference to page number cannot be made since the numbers will change in the future. Page numbers are mearly used to facilitate printout.
The format and layout will basically remain unchanged in the Internet version. However, some changes will be made in the way the coins are listed. For the time being no detailed maps will be published. Publication will be made according to numbered volumes. Volume number and find number has been calculated based on the finds known today. To start with most of the primary data (characteristics from striking) will be noted while only a few secondary data (characteristics received during circulation) will be noted. Hopefully, the missing data can be added in the future.
Since the CNS project has had no paid staff since 1988, the aim of the new way to publish the finds will be to achieve a number of advantages
- the find lists will be available immediately to all using the Internet
- quicker publication
- corrections and amendments can be done intermittently, that is it will be possible to keep the find lists updated
- the coins will be illustrated using digital images in colour which can be magnified c. 5-10 times
- more coins will be illustrated (the ambition is to illustrate all coins)
- no cost for printing and storing
Since the first CNS volume was published in 1975 an additional c. 46,200 coins have been found in Sweden. In order to be able to accommodate future finds and for the volumes not to be too large, the future volumes will each cover c. 2,000-4,000 coins (based on finds known today). However, for various reasons the actual number will in some cases be much higher.
A map showing the Swedish provinces, and the numbers they have been assigned in the CNS series can be found at: Kartor
For the numbering of future volumes covering Gotland see: Numrering av CNS Gotland
