Annual report of the Centre for Canadian Studies (2022)

This document is a summary of the activities of the Centre for Canadian Studies for the year 2022. The Centre is administrated by a board of five members who meet three times a year.

End of the Nordplus Higher Education project

The grant given by Nordplus Higher Education project lasted until May 2022 and could secure the funding for the promotion of the summer course on Canadian Studies (“Introduction to Canadian Studies from Nordic and Baltic perspectives, 7.5 ECTS) at Stockholm University (the course was modified with the former one as it is now a 7.5 ECTS course). 65 students were enrolled in this course (summer 2022) and 29 took the examination. There is an interest in the course and the course will be given each year as a summer course. The grant covered the publication of a book on Canadian Studies which will be published by Stockholm University Press by the end of 2023.

 

Activities of the Centre

On 23 March 2022, the Centre had a screening of the documentary “Je m’appelle humain” (2020) by Kim O’Bomsawin. Kim O’Bomsawin was present via Zoom after the movie to present her work and a discussion was engaged with Peter Rodhe, member of the board of the Stockholm Sami Association.

The interview with Paul Kawczak was published in the Nordic Journal of Francophone Studies.

The Centre for Canadian Studies of Stockholm University, in collaboration with the University of Dalarna, the Gaston-Miron library of the Sorbonne Nouvelle University, the International Association for Quebec Studies and the Alliance française of Falun had on 11 April an interview between Kim Thuý, Doan Bui and Neha Jain around migratory experiences and the relation between rootedness and wandering.

The Centre for Canadian Studies was invited the 31st of May 2022 to a lunch discussion at the Canadian Embassy in Sweden with the MP from Québec, Monique Pauzé (Repentigny).

The Centre for Canadian Studies continued its collaboration with the Association Internationale des Études Québécoises for the Prix des lycéens.

The Centre held a conversation on 5 October 2022 with the writer of the First Nations in Québec, Michel Jean. The Centre even collaborated to the open lecture given by Michel Jean at Tranströmer biblioteket on 4 October 2022.

 

International conferences

The Centre took part in an online conference “How Others See Canada: Perspectives from the Neighbours” on 24 September 2022. The conference was an online collaborative student conference in Canadian Studies organized by the Trent University’s School for the Study of Canada, Mount Allison University’s Centre for Canadian Studies and York University’s Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies.

The Centre made a presentation during a round-table discussion on the understanding of the outlines of American Studies during the annual conference of the Swedish Association for American Studies (6-7 October 2022) with took place at Örebro University. The aim was to show how Canadian studies could be localized in American Studies, the presentation is available on https://doi.org/10.17045/sthlmuni.21286047.v1

Last but not least, the Centre reinforced its cooperation with York University’s Robarts Centre and Memorial University’s Nexus Centre with the launching of joint seminars called Northern Studies Journal Club. The first seminar was held the 28th of October 2022 and was about “re-envisioning icy landscapes in video art” (presentation of two video artworks by Quebec artist Nelly-Eve Rajotte, the seminar was introduced by Sara Bédard-Goulet from Tartu University) and the second seminar was organized the 2nd of December 2022 on the topic “From Inuit Studies to Circumpolar Studies: Issues, Topics and Debates” with the participation of Caroline Hervé (Université Laval), Anna Hudson (York University) and Frédéric Laugrand (Université catholique de Louvain).
