Assessment literacy, towards a professional discourse

Issues in relation to assessment often involve questions of what represents good assessment practices and according to whom? How can we promote quality in assessment without increasing teacher workload? What does it mean to balance students’ needs, intended learning outcomes and the expectations on higher education? What about tensions between pedagogy and professional accountability? Together we will share experiences while applying empirical and research-based assessment literacy models and familiarizing ourselves with assessment terminology.

This workshop welcomes all with an interest in educational assessment, but particularly university teachers and researchers who are looking for an opportunity to discuss assessment and develop their assessment literacy discourse.

About the workshop

Assessment literacy can be defined as the knowledge and understanding of basic principles of assessment and is part of teachers’ key competences. It includes a professional language and terms such as reliability, validity, fairness, quality and relevance but also an awareness of what, how and why we are assessing. An additional aspect is to reflect on the consequences of assessment, for the individual student as well as for society.

During the workshop we will look into some key concepts and principles of assessment. Using an assessment literacy model the participants are invited to reflect on the assessment practices in a course or familiar context. The purpose is to strengthen the awareness and knowledge associated with quality assessment, including its terminology.
During the workshop the participants will:

  • Get a brief summary of assessment literacy and related terminology.
  • Get an introduction to an assessment literacy model and apply it on a familiar course or context.
  • Discuss and reflect on assessment designs and alignment with intended learning outcomes as well as feedback.
  • Discuss conditions that have an effect on assessment practices, for example remote teaching during the pandemic and different student backgrounds.

Workshop leader is Helena Reierstam, Senior lecturer at the Department of Education
