About me

My research focuses on the role of language in the assessment of content knowledge among langauge learners, right now among newly arrived immigrant students. I want to examine what kind of language skills different assessment types and test items require of the students. Another question concerns national policy guidelines and the possibility to use test accommodations to reduce the impact of limited language proficiency. What accommodations do teachers use? In my previous study (licentiate thesis) the focus was on teachers’ assessment practices and attitudes in a Swedish highschool context where English was used as the medium of instruction in biology and history.

My academic and research interests include academic literacy and language across the curriculum, content and language integrated learning (CLIL), language teaching, language in education policies, bilingualism and assessment, particularly written assessment.

I have a background as a language teacher and I have taught English and French as a foreign language in Swedish highschools. A couple of years as a French teacher in an American highschool adds to the teaching experience as well as teaching English for specific purposes (ESP) in an adult vocational program for logisticians. In 2015, I finished three years of research in the field of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) and assessment at Gothenburg University. Since then I have been working as a director of education at the Swedish National Agency for Education where I have been in charge of the national exams in English as a foreign language and modern languages and helped coordinate the process of developing frameworks for all the national tests.

I am excited to conduct this new study on content assessment among language learners, a so far underexplored area with a need for educational guidelines due to a growing multilingual context in Swedish schools. I look forward to synthesizing the studies from the two bi-/multilingual contexts (CLIL and newly arrived students) and present results, hopefully by the spring 2020.
