The role of generative AI in student reading practices

Curious about the ways Generative AI is shaping how university students interact with academic texts? This workshop will provide valuable insights into emerging trends and real student experiences.

In the context of the project Demystifying AI literacy in teacher training programmes funded by The Swedish Research Council we are proud to present Dr Thomas Corbin, Research Fellow at the Centre for Research Assessment and Digital Learning Deakin University. Dr. Corbin will lead a workshop on how Generative AI is influencing university students' reading habits. The workshop is open to university teachers at Stockholm University.

 

About the workshop

In this workshop, we will explore how students engage with academic texts when Generative AI (GenAI) is available. Our discussion is based on data from 24 interviews conducted at three universities in Australia, a small targeted survey with 100 participants, and a large broader survey with 8,500 respondents.

One key finding is that 54% of students, in both surveys, regularly use AI to assist with their readings. The interviews provide further insights into the different ways students incorporate AI into their reading process and their reasons for doing so.

During the workshop, we will reflect on strategies for both engaging with and avoiding the use of Generative AI in university studies. This discussion will consider the benefits and drawbacks of AI-assisted reading, helping participants think critically about its role in academic work.

Workshop leaders are Dr Thomas Corbin, Research Fellow at Deakin University and Cormac McGrath, Associate Professor at the Department of Education. The workshop is held in English.

The workshop is aimed at all teaching staff and educational managers, regardless of subject affiliation, at Stockholm University. Participation is free of charge. Book your place in good time, as places are limited. First come, first served is applied.

Organizer is the Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching (CeUL). CeUL offers workshops on a variety of teaching and learning topics with the aim to support and stimulate engaging and high-quality teaching at all levels at Stockholm University.
