Teaching for a sustainable future
How can university education, through its pedagogical form, help equip students with the tools to work towards ecological, social, and economic sustainability?
Book tailored support for your teaching teams and department
Stockholm University is committed to developing teaching that prepares students for the societal challenges of the future – while also contributing to the advancement of sustainable development. We offer departments practical and cost-free support in making this vision a reality in teaching and in interactions with students.
Together with you, we can explore how sustainability content and teaching methods can be integrated into subject-specific education, and how you can build a local structure to support this work.
We tailor the support to your needs – for example, in the form of a workshop, seminar, or lecture adapted to your specific activities and staff.

Guide: Liberal education, democracy, and sustainable development
This guide (only available in Swedish) is designed for you as a university teacher who wants to explore how education can make a difference in a world facing major sustainability challenges.
The text weaves together theory and practice – with a particular focus on how the concepts of liberal education (Swe. bildning) and democracy are connected to sustainable development. What does it mean for you as a teacher if students are to be able to discuss and act on sustainability in an informed and democratic way, from within their own discipline?

Throughout the guide, you’ll encounter the author Iann Lundegård’s voice in dedicated sections. He shares insights from his own teaching experience, poses questions for your reflection, and offers concrete examples of how you can develop your pedagogical practice – including through five forms of democratic participation.
The guide has been developed by the Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching (CeUL) to support your reflection on your role as a university teacher and to inspire teaching that contributes to a more sustainable future.
