Research supervision — theory and practice

This course focuses on providing new or experienced doctoral supervisors with the means and opportunity to critically reflect on their supervision in order to learn new skills and generate insights and inspiration through teamwork and engagement. This is a four full-day course.

Topics will include:

  • Perspectives on learning and teaching at the research level of education
  • Legal aspects of doctoral supervision
  • Ethics, gender and equality in supervision
  • The pedagogy of supervising


The course involves four full-days where participants from different faculties meet to critically reflect on and discuss aspects of topical interest for doctoral supervision at Stockholm University.

Participants who have completed the course will be given a certificate.

Admisson and Course Fee

Participants must have doctoral degree (or equivalent) and be employed at Stockholm University or another university or university college. Applicants employed at Stockholm University will be given priority.

12,500 SEK/participant. Normally the fee is covered by the participant's faculty or department. Please note that it is the responsibility of each participant to find out how the fee is paid and to ensure that the fee is actually paid. Application to the module is binding and the fee is nonrefundable.

If there are more applicants than available places in the course we will make a selection of the applicants as follows:

The main criteria of admission is the date of application. We also prioritize applicants who have previously applied for this course but did not get a place. We also take into consideration that participants are evenly distributed regarding faculties, gender and experience in research supervision.

In the selection we also take into consideration the following criteria:

  • Applicants who are from a research area that is underrepresented among other participants
  • Applicants with underrepresented gender
  • Applicants with experience in research supervision in cases where there is a lack among the other participants.
